Has anyone ever told you that you have the voice of an angel? Or that you sound like the guy on the car commercial? Ever wonder what it would take to break into the voice over industry? The voice over industry is great for people who like to make their work schedules, be their own boss and have fun at work. Voice over artists come from all backgrounds. Some have experience in e-learning, others are active in their local and regional performing arts groups and still others just want a change of pace from their daily work. If you are thinking of starting a career as a voice over artist, here are few simple steps you can take to get your new career off the ground.
Find a voice coach. For many voice over artists the first step is to find a reputable and reliable coach. This person can function as your gateway to the industry. They provide practical information about how to break into the industry, develop a demo and get your name out there as well as provide instruction.
Find Support. Outside of your voice over coach, find others who can help provide support and guidance. Talk to people at your local university in the theater department or look for groups online that you can join. There is a group on Facebook, Voiceover Start-Up that is for people just like yourself who are considering a career in the industry.
Practice. Using the information you gained from your voice coach and others, take the time to practice as much and as often as possible. Record yourself and listen to your voice, practice vocal exercises, reading aloud and creating inflections with your voice. When you feel ready, make a sample.
Send out your demos and work with reputable companies to book your gigs. Becoming a voice over artist is an industry where no two days are alike. Best of luck in your new career!
