3 Questions Answered About Audiobook Narration

Wednesday, July 25, 2018

In the world of self publishing, one of the key features readers are looking for is audio versions of books. With so many of us spending time commuting by car or train, listening to a favorite book is a great way to pass the time. If you are looking to add a voice over to your audiobook, here are 3 things you should know.

  1. What is the Average Listening Speed? The average consumer can listen to about 150 wpm. This will help you determine how long your book will be for the average consumer. However this does not account for "speed listeners." In 2015, The Atlantic published an article that highlighted many consumers feel the need to put the speed of their listening to as much as twice the normal pace in order to digest the material faster. If this is the case, be sure to have a very clear and succinct storyteller.
  2. Can I Do It Myself? You can certainly do it yourself but to create a high quality product you will need professional recording equipment and of course, that voice that leaves your listeners wanting more. All our voice over artists provide unedited, raw material for you giving you full control over the finished product. Additionally, we will provide 2 or 3 takes of the material so you can choose the one that you prefer.
  3. How Much Does It Cost? This will depend on the length of the book. At Voice Talent Now, we require that all materials be submitted in a document format where the materials are double space type in 12 point Times New Roman font. The cost is $49 per page. If you are unsure about the pricing, feel free to email us your audio book and we can price it out for you.
